NATO ASI regulations, fees, and support

According to the NATO ASI regulations, attendance to the NATO ASI is allowed to a limited number of scientists and practitioners in order to maximize the opportunities of effective interaction with the lecturers. Selection will be performed on the basis of their qualifications, their potential contribution and their expected benefits for the attendees, by considering the limited number of allowed seats and the other restrictions required by NATO.

Attendees whose applications will be accepted and confirmed by NATO will have to pay their travel costs and the accommodation. Accommodation cost will be about Euro 680, and includes breakfast, meals (except beverages which should be bought separately) and coffee breaks. The accommodation should be paid on site. Company employees are also required to pay an attendance fee (see below).

Grants have been made available by NATO to cover the accommodation expenses of selected attendees. Further grants for can be made available by other bodies. Information provided by the prospective attendees in the application will be used to select the grant recipients according to their expected benefits and the less favored economic condition of their country of residence. Limited financial support will be made available by NATO also for travel expenses of selected attendees. As financial support for travel is limited, preference will be given to students coming from NATO Partner Countries and Mediterranean Dialogue Countries.

A limited number of travel awards will made available by the National Science Foundation of the United States of America. Each NSF travel award will cover a major portion of the recipient's  airfare between the United States and Europe. For details about eligibility and conditions please see the NSF ASI Travel Awards page.

Please consult the NATO Participation conditions web page for details about eligible countries and for a definition of NATO Countries, NATO Partner Countries, and Mediterranean Dialogue Countries (see also items 12-18 on the NATO ASI web page). Note that under these conditions there is a limit of 25% participants from any country. Also, there must be a minimum of 2 students from eligible Partner or Mediterranean Dialogue countries for every 3 students from NATO countries.

Attendance fee for company employees

Company employees are required to pay an attendance fee of 500 Euro (or, equivalently, LIT 968,000). This can be paid in advance by bank transfer to the following account:
Bank name: Monte dei Paschi di Siena
Account name: Paolo Frasconi NATO ASI
Account number: IT 37 Z 01030 71540 1483547
or it can be paid by cash on site. We regret that credit card payment is not possible.

Submitting a paper or a poster

During the school, evening poster sessions will be organized to give participants the opportunity of presenting their most recent research results. Selected contributions will be also presented during a special oral session to be held during the last day. Accepted papers will be published online on this web site. Some of the more significant contributions may be invited for a chapter in the forthcoming NATO Science series book (IOS Press).

Contributions are solicited in all aspects of Artificial Intelligence or Heuristic Methods with applications to molecular biology. For poster presentation, prepare an extended abstract (max 2 pages). For oral presentation, a longer version should be submitted (max 10 pages).

Submissions should be sent by email to Prof. Paolo Frasconi (paolo@dsi.unifi.it). Please write NATO ASI Submission in the subject line and indicate your preference (poster/talk).
