Laboratory of Process Control and Environmental Systems

The Laboratory is available to groups of students attending the course of Process Control to develop a "hands on" experience in digital control of continuous processes. Several bench-scale processes are available (Thermal process, Continuous third order process, DC Motor, Water Tank system, Diffusive Reactor,  PLC system) to study dynamical  models and design digital controllers. These can then be implemented in real-time using the Labview 5.1 software platform. Usually the exercise lasts several weeks and consists of an assignment which includes process modelling, controller design and practical tests which are then assessed in a final report.

For the students attending the Environmental Modelling course, the lab offers facilites to study the mixing properties of continuous stirred and plug-flow reactors. Field instrumentation is also available to collect on-site water quality data such as Dissolved Oxygen, stream flow velocity, pH, and many other water quality indicators.
