The aim of the workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners from the field of document image analysis and understanding and from the field of document databases.
The decreasing cost of acquisition and storage devices makes achievable the storage of huge amounts of paper documents into an electronic form. On the other hand, in the last few years there was a new deal in techniques for document image analysis and understanding. There are now proposed solutions to the problem of extracting information from paper documents and storage of them in a way useful for the retrieval of interesting documents.
Contributions to this workshop are expected from both academic and industrial researchers, describing complete systems or new algorithms and techniques.
We invite papers that are related (but not limited) to the following areas of interest.

Submitted papers will be evaluated based on originality, significance, technical soundness and clarity of exposition. All papers will be referred by at least two members of the program committee. All accepted papers will be published by IEEE Computer Society Press in a volume of the DEXA '99 workshops. Papers should be up to 5000 words in length and can be submitted either by sending PostScript files or by sending hard copy papers.
